Harishanthan, a Locomotor disability photographer from Tamil Nadu, has always been driven by his passion for photography. However, his journey to success was far from easy. Despite his disability, it was not a lack of determination that hindered him, but rather his financial struggles. In the beginning, he borrowed money to learn the craft, and despite his immense passion, his talent went largely unrecognized.
That all changed when NAAI (National Abilympic Association of India) gave him the chance to participate in competitions that celebrate the skills of differently-abled individuals.
NAAI’s support truly shaped me into a professional photographer,” said Harishanthan.
In 2007, Harishanthan participated in an NAAI competition in Delhi and was honored to receive a gold medal from the then Chief Minister of Delhi, Smt. Sheila Dikshit. This recognition was the turning point in his career, propelling him to represent India in an international competition in Japan, where he won a bronze medal, bringing pride to the nation. It was from that moment that Harishanthan realized photography was not just a passion, but his profession.
Despite facing numerous challenges, such as doubts from potential clients about his ability to capture special events due to his disability, Harishanthan continued to push forward. He proved his worth, and over the years, his work began to speak for itself. Today, he runs a successful photography studio from his home in his village, where the income supports his family and enables him to educate his two children. His wife has been a constant pillar of support throughout his journey.
Recently, Harishanthan had the opportunity to participate in another NAAI photography competition, where he won a silver medal. This victory not only reignited his hope but also fueled his desire to pursue the gold medal at the upcoming international competition. He is determined to prove that, no matter the odds, anyone can achieve greatness with dedication and belief.
Harishanthan’s story is a powerful message to all people with disabilities: “Just because you don’t have wings, don’t stop from flying. Don’t ask anyone for wings to help you fly. Make your belief your wings. The sky is yours.”
Beyond photography, Harishanthan dreams of becoming a renowned film director. He has already produced a few short films, and his aspirations continue to soar. His journey is a true testament to the power of resilience, talent, and the unwavering support of organizations like NAAI and Sarthak.
